That post was powerful. I’m going through a transition in my life where some important decisions need to be made. This post is giving me a lot to consider as I really decide (for myself) what path I want to continue on, really thinking about what is important to me and pursuing that fully. I’m so grateful for the insight you have although the circumstances weren’t ideal. You are very strong Dan and I’m glad to be a part of your journey.

When you are told by a doctor that you could die at any moment it gives you some perspective. Life on this earth is limited for all of us, but as I Christian I know that eternity awaits me. So I am living with eternity in mind, thankful for the time I have, and trying to invest it in the things that really mater.

I OD’d on my meds for it. I was out of it for three days in the hospital before I came to. At first, I was angry that I couldn’t even kill myself right. As time went on, and especially the first time I was outside after it, I was so grateful to be alive! I still am despite my ups and downs with depression.

It may not always look like it or seem like there’s any hope in the middle of a bad episode, but there is always hope.

I’ve reached many goals since then and am grateful that I had the opportunity to do so.

My increasing faith (over time, mind you) has helped immeasurably. Find whatever resonates with you and work with it. It does help, I promise.

It’s very hard to do the opposite of what you want to do when depressed, ex, hanging out with friends or being around people despite the strong urge to isolate, get out of bed and start the day even if you feel crappy, or exercise (I still struggle with that one a lot!), call and talk to someone about any old thing–it helps one feel connected to the world and other people. Depression doesn’t like any of that and there’s a good chance it will lift to an extent or even completely.

And the greatest joys in my life–getting married and having an amazing teenage boy–all have occurred since then.

Being a parent changes one’s perspective forever. That kid, no matter the age, needs you in his/her life, there’s no doubt of that.

I don’t know if my lessons learned will help others, but even if it helps one person, I’ll be grateful for that.

Jill

I didn’t almost die but I was to the point where I couldn’t keep food in and was pretty much bedridden most of the time. I was so anorexic and weak that I could barely think. I will say I prayed to God that if it was my time, please just take me. I had no quality of life. To top it off, my best friend lost her son and then she cut off all contact with me because of our kids being best friends; I lost my mom; and I lost my beloved dog all within a year. Life was hard and all I could do was pray. I felt like only a few friends really “got it” and stuck by me through thick and thin. I got the best care possible at the Mayo Clinic and things started to look up. I tried for 5 long years to support my friend and be there whenever she was ready, but once I figured out that she had moved on without wanting me to be her best friend in her life anymore, I finally let go and became “free” and at peace. I, too, have tightened my circle of friends to those who don’t require me to work so hard to be their friend. God bless you, Dan.
