Thank you Dan for this thought provoking, yet practical guide on recognising our mentors who have always been there for us, with carrying that title ! I share a similar concept with people I informally mentor . I tell they need should use the second SIM slot on the smart phone to save a list of CIMs – Coach, Influencers and Mentors and if possible limit to 10 overall (at ay point in time). I quite like the way you have described the different types of mentor. Thank you for making in simple to follow.

And, June for this thoughtful comment and sharing your experience. I almost got tempted to say "Ditto" for me too but then I still have atleast a decade to become granddad and learn from my grandchildren 🙂

Life is a continuous learning journey and I learn new things from the people (and animals) that meet and interact on a daily basis. I have more recently started making it a point to thank them personally, which take the joy of learning to a whole new level.

I found this most helpful, especially realistic expectations part.
I thought I had never had a mentor or people wanting to invest in me, now I see I was wrong, I just wasn’t looking at it in the right light.
For half my life, my mentor, my turn to person, was my mother. Now I would have to say it is my wise husband, my adult children, my grandson, and my life group family.
I have learned much about love, character, and spirituality from my husband.
My daughters have taught me how to be vulnerable, fearless, non-judgmental, and authentic.
My son has shown me not to sweat the small stuff – he takes ‘don’t worry and be happy’ to a whole new level; forgiveness, and how loving acceptance changes a person.
And my grandson taught me what it feels like to be a kid again.
Turns out I am surrounded by mentors…thanks again!

It really opened my eyes to how I’ve been thinking about mentorship. I used to look for that one person to be my formal mentor, but now I see I’ve already had mentors around me all along. These people have helped me in different ways.
Your advice about not making things weird really struck me. It’s important to build relationships naturally without overwhelming the other person. Sometimes, mentorship can be more of a service you pay for, and that’s perfectly fine, as long as you keep things professional and maintain a good connection. I’ll definitely take your advice and focus on approaching mentors with the right mindset going forward

Fears and Insecurities are common impulses that trigger the need for mentorship. Careful scrutiny of the need for a mentor is very necessary to get the best out of every mentor-mentee relationship. Purpose is key!

Thanks for this piece.
